Michael Stewart, M.A. Hunter College (in-progress), B.A. University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2012)

Michael Stewart is a graduate student pursuing the Master of Arts in Geography at Hunter College. His research interests include transportation and its implications for ecological sustainability and how access to it impacts human/social quality of life. Stewart has been awarded a Boren Fellowship for the 2024-2025 academic year, through which he will travel to Morocco where he'll participate in a year of intensive study of Maghrebi Arabic (Darija). He intends to apply his newly-acquired language skills to his thesis research into Morocco's high-speed rail network and its climate and social impacts. Michael is Hunter’s first Graduate Boren fellow.

About the Boren Fellowship
Boren Awards are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. national security/interests and underrepresented in study abroad. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.
