Peter Batty is widely seen as an industry leader in the field of geospatial and location technologies. He is currently Chief Research Officer at SSP Innovations, LLC, where is leading the development of a ground-breaking new field data capture product called SSP Vision, which leverages computer vision, machine learning and augmented reality to deliver much faster, simpler and more automated capture than traditional approaches.

Previously he has served as CTO at several leading companies in the geospatial industry (and two of the world's top 200 software companies)

  • IQGeo (formerly Ubisense), where he was a founder and created their geospatial platform originally known as myWorld
  • Intergraph (now part of Hexagon), the second largest geospatial software company with revenues of ~$600m (2005-2007)
  • Smallworld (now part of GE Energy), which grew from startup to global market leader in GIS for utilities and communications during the 1990s (1992-2002)

He has created three significant products: SSP Vision, the IQGeo platform, originally known as myWorld, and GE PowerOn, which rapidly became the market leader for electric outage management, according to Gartner.

Peter served on the board of OSGeo, the Open Source Geospatial Foundation from 2011 to 2013. He served for 6 years on the board of GITA, the Geospatial Information and Technology Association, and was a member of the Advisory Boards of startups Public Earth and GeoIQ. He was Chair of the FOSS4G 2011 conference in Denver, which had 900 attendees from 42 countries.

He has been a founder of two startups. The first was Ten Sails, which provided early stage funding to, and later merged with, Ubisense, and subsequently became IQGeo. The second was Spatial Networking, which developed an online service combining social networking and future location to help people optimize travel and meet their friends more often.

He has published many articles and spoken at many conferences around the world, and received a record nine speaker awards from GITA (the Geospatial Information and Technology Association), for presentations at their North American and Australian conferences. He was a member of the GeoWorld magazine Editorial Advisory Board for many years. He has been involved with industry standards efforts including the Open GIS Consortium and IEC TC57 Working Group 14. Peter also worked in the geospatial field with IBM.

He has a Masters degree in computer science from Oxford University, finishing top of his year, and a BA in Mathematics, also from Oxford.
