GIS & Housing: the role of GIS in addressing housing challenges
Thursday, November 20, 2024
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM
via Zoom

Speakers:
Dr. Jochen Albrecht, Hunter College
Dr. Laxmi Ramasubramanian, College of Staten Island

The presentation follows the outline of our book, but omits the introductory GIS parts. We talk about why Housing is an important topic and introduce the audience to the issues underlying the (1) housing supply, (2) housing affordability, and (3) homelessness crises. We then provide some background on demographic and technology shifts, land use planning, sub-urbanization, and gentrification.

Skipping over GIS data and visualization techniques, we then dive into what more advanced GIS techniques can be applied to support housing researchers and spend a considerable amount of the presentation on directions for future research such as

  • Transforming the Single-Family Residential Unit
  • Housing and Neighborhood Design
  • Expanding Intra- and Inter-Neighborhood Mobility Alternatives
  • Combating Homelessness and Housing Insecurity
  • Climate Change and Sustainability
  • Public Health and Safety
  • Housing and Senseable Cities
  • The role of Geo-AI
