2025 Cohen Prize in Geographic Excellence
Undergraduate Award Winner
We are proud to announce Mariya Trofymova as the recipient of the 2025 Cohen Prize in Geographic Excellence, awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student in geography or a related field.
Mariya graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and majored in Environmental Studies at Hunter College. Her interest in Arctic permafrost and greenhouse gas emissions developed through coursework and research exploring the intersection of Earth systems science and geospatial analysis. For her capstone, she used GIS mapping and model comparisons to identify regions within the Arctic Circle most at risk for carbon release due to permafrost melt. Mariya plans to pursue graduate studies in Environmental Science, with a focus on geospatial analysis and climate modeling.
