FAQ
What are the requirements for the program degree?
For program requirements, please refer to the corresponding CUNY catalog. Links for GIS-MS, GIS-AC, and SPADS-CERT are listed above.
What courses should I take?
Please read the “Courses” page of this web site.
How much does the program cost?
See the Tuition and Fees at Hunter College Website. Specifically for MGEOi program, visit tuition and fees in the graduate catalog.
How long does each program take?
In general, MS in GeoInformatics takes two years while Advanced GIS certificate takes one year. Undergraduate spatial data science certificate students can finish the program during the junior and senior years while simultaneously meeting the requirements of their majors. As many of our students start working full or part time with their GIS skills, it may take them longer to graduate.
Are there any financial aids, teaching or research assistantships?
We do not offer financial aids through the GIS programs or the department. CUNY and Hunter do. Please visit the Office of Financial Aid for more information.
Within the department, many professors have research grants and hire students as research assistants. We sometimes also receive requests from other institutions for students who can help their works with GIS. Occasionally, the department has teaching openings to cover GIS faculty members who cannot teach for particular semesters. In most cases, these opportunities are for students who have taken some GTECH courses in the program and who the professors know have mastered certain knowledge and skills, especially programming, analytical, and/or writing, communication skills.
For students in the MGEOi program, we provide supports for conference registration and travels. The quantity and amount of the supports vary with the number of received requests and the budget. Fund for mentored and collaborative research is also exclusively available to MGEOi students, which provides both financial and academic benefits.
How can I apply to the programs?
- For Undergraduate Spatial Data Science Certificate, declare the certificate online (the certificate is a “major” in the system).
- For both Advanced GIS Certificate and MGEOi, go through the normal graduate admission application.
- Do NOT use the graduate non-degree admission application for GIS-Advanced Certificate.
- Those non-degree admissions only allow one to take graduate-level courses.
- Graduate students from Graduate Center or other CUNY campuses will also need to apply thorugh the admission system as well.
- For those who are already in a master’s program at Hunter but want to declare the GIS certificate, please file the Graduate Certificate Declaration form, for which the physical copy might be available from the Office of Registrar.
