Study Space
Thanks to Prof. Sean Ahearn and CARSI Lab, students in the MGEOi program are eligible to access the study space in room HN1024 (inside HN 1023, CARSI). This room has been a space for CARSI’s research activities in GIS, Remote Sensing, and LiDAR applications. Many MGEOi students have also worked on their course projects and theses with their peers in the space. The room has a few cubicles and study tables that MGEOi students can use. Microwave and refrigerator are also available in the room.
Computing Resources
CUNY, Hunter College, and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science provide virtual computing and applications through Apporto, college-wide on-campus computer labs, and departmental computer classrooms (HN1090B-1 and HN1090B-2). In addition to these resources, the GIS programs also offer the following resources.
Twelve Loaner Computers (Large Mobile)
- Dell Precision 7760, or newer model
- 17-Inch mobile workstations (basically large, heavy, but powerful laptops)
- Intel Xeon CPU, higher than 3.0 GHz, w/ 6 or more cores
- 32GB or more memory
- 1TB or 2TB SSD Drive
- NVIDIA RTX A1000 or A4000 GPU
- Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
Loaner Computer Four Loaner Computers (Regular Laptops)
- Dell Latitude 5450
- 14-inch Touchscreen with Camera
- Intel Core Ultra 7 165U vPro with 12 cores
- Integrated Intel Graphics Card (No dedicated GPU)
- 1T SSD Drive
- 32 GB Memory
- Windows 11 Pro
- Ideal for most GTECH course works
Four Mini Pads
- Three Apple iPad mini
- One Samsung Android Pad
- For field works and mobile developments
- Expected to be returned within one month
Four Workstations in the Student Study Room
- Dell Precision 5820 Tower
- Intel Xeon W-2235, 3.8-4.6GHz, 6 cores, 12 logical processors
- 128 GB Memory
- 2TB SSD Drive
- NVDIA RTX A4000 GPU
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
- 24 or 27 inch high quality Dell monitors
- Wireless mouse and keyboard
- Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
Dell Precision 5820 Tower One Mac Studio
- Mac Studio, a compact yet powerful machine for demanding tasks
- Apple M3 Ultra chip with 28-core CPU, 60-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine
- For a comparison, a NVIDIA A4000 GPU has
- 48 second-generation RT Cores
- 192 third-generation Tensor Cores, and
- 6,144 CUDA® cores
- For a comparison, a NVIDIA A4000 GPU has
- 512 GB Memory
- It is provided as a remote server and has no monitor or mouse/keyboard.
- This is not particularly good for deep learning and AI works.
- It is excellent for data processing that allows parallel computation and needs a lot of memory.
- Apply for a user name/password and you can remotely log in the Mac system.
- The right way to use the machine is to get everything ready and run code/program with data without user interaction.
One “Super” Workstation
Dell Precision 7960 Tower
Intel Xeon(R) W9-3495X, 1.9-4.8GHz, 56 cores, 112 logical processors
256 GB Memory
Six 4.0 TB SSDs
Three NVDIA RTX A4000 GPUs
10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
24 Inch Dell Monitor
Wireless mouse and keyboard
Windows 11 Pro For Workstations
We suggest using this machine for computationally intenstive deep learning and AI works that require GPU and CUDA. For regular data processing works, please use the other four Dell workstations.
Super Workstation Hardware Information
All these computers are equipped with high-end hardware and can support big geospatial data analytics, 3D, VR, deep learning, and AI applications. Students in all GIS programs will receive instructions regarding how to apply for the loaner computer. MGEOi students can access the study room and all the computers in the room.
Fund for Mentored Collaborative Research
Fund for mentored and collaborative research is exclusively available to MGEOi students, which provides both financial and academic benefits. Application information will be distributed through the MGEOi mail list as well as Hunter official email addresses.
Conference and Travel Support
MGEOi students can apply for financial support, mostly in the form of a reimbursement, for conference registration and travel need. The amount for each student depends on the budget and the number of requests. Please contact the program advisor for the availability of the fund.
