Contemporary Events Essays (2):

The purpose of these essays is to relate cultural geography to contemporary events. Two essays are due on the dates indicated on the syllabus. Your essays are to be based on full-length (500 word minimum) news articles that (A) appear in a mainstream newspaper or news magazine, or a related online source, and that (B) demonstrate at least four of the five major themes of cultural geography (see text Chapter 1). Each essay should be at 3-4pages long, double-spaced, 12 point type. Begin your essay with a full citation of the article. Devote the first page of your essay to a summary of the article, and the rest to a discussion of ways in which the themes of cultural geography that you identify are exemplified in the news story. Be sure to staple a copy of the article to your essay. The first essay must be based on an article published on or after the first day of the current term. The second essay must be based on an article published after the due date for the first essay. The articles used must be news articles - not editorials, or op-ed articles, or articles from a newspaper's travel section.
